referencing Emperor Of Sand, CD, Album, 558742-2. I'm following Mastodon for nearly 10 years now but must say since their magnum opus Crack The Skye they are on a continuous downward slope, with this album being the new low. As with the album preceding this one, there's a total lack of coherence listening to this album in full and the songs feel disparate. Emperor of Sand is the seventh studio album from American Progressive Metal band Mastodon. The album’s concept and story follows a desert wanderer who has been handed a death sentence. Themes of death and survival are woven into the song’s lyrics, which were inspired by experiences members of the band had when family and friends were recently diagnosed with cancer, as stated by band members: At the end of the story, the person simultaneously dies and is saved. It’s about going through cancer, going through chemotherapy and all the things associated with that
Mastodon’s seventh studio album, Emperor of Sand, begins with a Curs. nd for good reason. Modern metal’s fiercest four-piece suffered a litany of tragic personal events leading up to the album’s writing process. Bassist-vocalist Troy Sanders’ wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, drummer-vocalist Brann Dailor’s mother endured chemotherapy, having battled cancer for the last 40 years, and guitarist Bill Kelliher’s mother passed away from a brain tumor. The members of Mastodon have treaded lightly around the dreaded C word while promoting Emperor of Sand, obviously still reeling from the.
Emperor Of Sand’ is the record on which Mastodon learned to do all the things they already did a lot better. Their riffs are still heavy and not too fast, there is an abundance of classy twin guitar harmonies, drummer Brann Dailor still lays down some downright incredible fills and yet, it all sounds just a little better than before. With their latest album, Mastodon moves closer to the conceptual ambitions of Crack the Skye after a few years of taking a more laidback approach to music. For those of you who couldn’t stay awake through Mastodon’s polarizing fourth full-length, you may be happy to learn that the band is much more restrained here than they were on Skye.
EMPEROR OF SAND is yet another very well crafted MASTODON album with all the expected riffs, vocals and percussive accompaniments. While that may sound like a sort of comfort food for some, it is also a source of mediocrity to others.
Mastodon – Emperor of Sand. Death underlies the message and intense, cathartic sound of the band's seventh record. on April 03, 2017, 12:00am. While Emperor of Sand has roots in painfully personal stories, the record kicks off with Sultan’s Curse, and in fact, the entire album seems like it could be turned into a graphic novel or video game. Brann Dailor describes the theme: A Sultan in the desert hands down a death sentence to this guy.
More compellingly, Emperor of Sand marks the third Mastodon album directly inspired by a bandmember’s loss of a relative, in this case the untimely passing of guitarist Bill Kelliher’s mother. That Mastodon are capable of channeling personal tragedies into madcap sci-fi fantasy is impressive, but on Emperor of Sand they finally harness their musical ambitions as well. Without fail, whenever a song on Emperor of Sand feels like it’s about to go overboard on the polish, the band takes it in a more jagged direction . If anything, Emperor of Sand proves the opposite. Musicians often rationalize losing their edge by talking about maturity. Mastodon can now feel free to use the word without lying to their fanbase.
