Founder and artistic director of the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne since 1989, pianist and conductor Lorraine Vaillancourt has performed regularly for the past thirty years, for several ensembles internationally. Her recent work with Les Percussions de Strasbourg was enthusiastically received by critics. She is responsible for many premieres both as a pianist and as a conductor. A founding member of Les Événements du Neuf (1978-1989), she has also conducted the Atelier de musique contemporaine at the Music Faculty of the Université de Montréal since 1974

Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM), based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is one of the world's premier chamber orchestras specializing in contemporary classical music. It was founded in 1989 by Lorraine Vaillancourt, who serves as the ensemble's conductor and pianist. The orchestra comprises 15 musicians: string quintet, wind quintet, a second clarinet, trumpet, trombone, piano, and percussion.
