Thom Yorke is not a man given to playing against type. His debut solo album arrived with all the glamour, joie de vivre and zany humour that have long been his trademark. Those who thought he might launch The Eraser by jetting from London to New York to play two attention-grabbing shows in a day or hosting a sumptuous buffet luncheon featuring specially designed cocktails by Dick Bradsell and cabaret from Four Poofs and a Piano had underestimated the Radiohead frontman's legendary bonhomie

While Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood will always stand at stage center, you barely need 10 minutes with a Radiohead record to understand how readily the band shifts its weight from one member to another; so strong are their individual voices as musicians that you can practically hear the pistons moving underneath their songs. On a smaller scale, the problems afflicting these tracks afflict the album as a whole; even allowing for the better-crafted songs, there's little-to-no dynamic range on The Eraser. As a listening experience, it's claustrophobic and compressed, and with rare exception, offers little in the way of wide open space. What little breathing room there is usually comes courtesy of Yorke's vocal, and while it's nice to see him once again testing the limits of what he can do naturally with his voice, it might not be enough to save the record for some.

The Eraser, Thom Yorke's first album away from Radiohead, is intensely focused and steady. It doesn't have the dynamics - the shifts of mood, tempo, volume - held by any Radiohead album, and it's predominantly electronic, so it's bound to rankle many of the fans who thought Kid A was too unhinged from rock & roll. It's definitely not the kind of album you put on to get an instant shot of energy, and at the same time, it doesn't contain anything as sullen as "How to Disappear Completely. Since it is so balanced, it might initially seem unwavering,.

The sketch is hysterical if you can find it, and the scene with Thom bowling is priceless, but to the point, in the sketch, Andy Dick parodies the lazy eyed Creep by playing him so completely depressed, he can barely find the energy to do anything
