Psychotic Reaction" is a song by the American garage rock band Count Five, released in June 1966 on their debut studio album of the same name. It peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was among the first successful acid (or psychedelic) rock songs, containing the characteristics that would come to define acid rock: the use of feedback and distortion replacing early rock music's more melodic electric guitars. In Canada, the song reached No. 3 on October 31, 1966.
Psychotic Reaction was written by Count Five ’s Irish singer and guitarist John Sean Byrne. Byrne was a student at San Jose City College, where he got the idea for the title from a health class. At first, the song didn’t do much on the charts, but then LA’s influential KRLA started spinning the track. The first time Byrne heard it on the radio, he burst out the front door and ran up and down the street. Things might’ve turned out different for the Count Five if the band hadn’t turned down millions in tour bookings to go back to school. Psychotic Reaction" Track Info. And frankly, despite Bangs' wild-eyed prose in praise of Psychotic Reaction, there would be some justice to that disappearance: this album really isn't all that great! There's the title track, of course, a total Yardbirds' ripoff that turns out to be better than any of that overrated band's patented rave-ups, thanks in huge part to Kenn Ellner's brilliantly bratty strangulated whine of a voice. Then there's the mysterious "Pretty Big Mouth," a swamp rock groove with the most bizarre lyrics on the entire album.
