Melvin Stecher and Norman Horowitz became Stecher and Horowitz in 1951. Still in their teens, the two New York-born pianists had already made impressive solo debuts. Deciding to form a team, they made their first appearances on the major hotel circuit, playing everything from Gershwin to Chopin. In 1954, the debut of Stecher and Horowitz in their home town took place in the city's best-known entertainment house. They were the first duo-piano attraction to be engaged at Radio City Music Hall, where they played a record 84 performances. For the following five consecutive years, they toured.

Stecher and Horowitz became a professional duo in 1951, while still students, continuing to perform together for the next five decades. Managed by National Concert and Artists Corporation/Civic Music and later by Columbia Artists Concerts, they performed recitals throughout the United States, Canada, Central and South America (under State Department sponsorship), Europe, Israel, Japan and Australia. In 2002, Stecher and Horowitz created The New York International Piano Competition (NYIPC), a biennial, no-elimination competition open to pianists of all nationalities ages 16–21
Melvin Stecher and Norman Horowitz, the acclaimed American piano duo known as Stecher & Horowitz since 1951, are equally celebrated in the world of music education.
