The tone of the brass section, always an important consideration in any Mahler recording, is quite powerful and round. The most intriguing aspect of this performance, however, is the inclusion of a very infrequently heard extra movement (second in the sequence of five total) that Mahler had decided to omit from the final version of the score. This extra movement is interesting from an academic perspective, but its inclusion interrupts the familiar flow of the symphony.
