The Splinter Shards the Birth of Separation is the second full-length release by metalcore band Zao, released on Tooth & Nail Records on April 1, 1997. This album is considered to be Zao's last album that leaned toward a more hardcore sound, after which the band demonstrated more of a metal influence. Many of the tracks (such as "Exchange", "Endure", and "In Loving Kindness") are re-arranged and re-recorded versions of songs from the band's previous album All Else Failed.

It seemed the message took precedence. The Splinter Shards The Birth Of Separation gave equal precesence, mixing the Christian centered lyrics with the piercing vocals of Shawn Jonas, well placed harmonics intermixed with the strong chord progressions of Roy Goudy and Jesse Smiths drums as the foundation of the record, adding emphasis with bell hits and muted crash strikes. Zao, subsequently, went through a slew of lineups and releases, none quite matching the sonic completeness or originality of Splinters

Before Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest Zao was almost a completely different band. With all different members besides Jesse Smith. Who now is no longer in Zao. This is there second LP, and has more of a hardcore sound and less of a metalcore sound that is found on Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest. This LP is far from being a classic like Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest is, there are a lot of flaws. Shawn Jonas – Vocals Roy Goudy – Guitar Mic Cox – Bass Jesse Smith – Drums. The guitar on this record is pretty average. Like Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest. The Splinter Shards the Birth of Separation is a good listen if you want to listen to some really early Hardcore/Metalcore or if you are a big Zao fan. But good luck finding this record still. The only way is to "obtain" it from the internet.

Reviews about ZAO - The Splinter Shards The Birth Of Separation (1):
Hilarious Kangaroo
The problem with a lot of the 90s hardcore was that often bands would sacrifice musical depth for motive. Zao, subsequently, went through a slew of lineups and releases, none quite matching the sonic completeness or originality of Splinters. Shawn Jonas would say later that fans always raved about the album but that he didnt feel the same. Citing reasons such as, the actual song writing was done by the founding member and former lead vocalist Eric Reeder. However, regardless of the bands feelings about the endeavor, it left the community at large longing for more and reminiscing and one might debate, prolonging their relevance more so than without. Regardless, this release is essential in any metalcore catalog.
