Marta Sebestyen and Musikas collaborate with violinist Alexander Balanescu on The Bartok Album, a work that traces the Hungarian folk influences on Bela Bartok's compositions.
The Bartok Album includes 3 of Bartok's original phonograph recordings, original voices from almost 100 years ago singing the music of their land. The sound is scratchy and weak, but their honesty, love of life and even their self-consciousness at being recorded still comes through today. These three folk recordings are followed by Bartok's transformation of them into serious music. Three exerpts from Duos for Violin are interpretations of pieces collected from his travels
Béla Viktor János Bartók (/ˈbeɪlə ˈbɑːrtɒk/; Hungarian: ; 25 March 1881 – 26 September 1945) was a Hungarian composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. He is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century; he and Franz Liszt are regarded as Hungary's greatest composers (Gillies 2001). Through his collection and analytical study of folk music, he was one of the founders of comparative musicology, which later became ethnomusicology.
