Songs in the Key of Life is the eighteenth album by American recording artist Stevie Wonder, released on September 28, 1976, by Motown Records, through its division Tamla Records. It was the culmination of his "classic period" albums. The album was recorded primarily at Crystal Sound studio in Hollywood, with some sessions recorded at the Record Plant in Hollywood, the Record Plant in Sausalito, and The Hit Factory in New York City. Final mixing was performed at Crystal Sound.

Fans of the love album Talking Book can marvel that he sets the bar even higher here, with brilliant material like the tenderly cathartic and gloriously redemptive "Joy Inside My Tears," the two-part, smooth-and-rough "Ordinary Pain," the bitterly ironic "All Day Sucker," or another classic heartbreaker, "Summer Soft. If all this sounds overwhelming, it is; Stevie Wonder had talent to spare during the mid-'70s, and instead of letting the reserve trickle out during the rest of the decade, he let it all go with one massive burst. His only subsequent record of the '70s was the similarly gargantuan but largely instrumental soundtrack Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants. Track Listing - Disc 1. Title/Composer.

The magnum opus of Stevie Wonder, this epic double LP that spans almost one hour and a half is one of the most influential and acclaimed albums of all time. It reached position on the Billboard 200, won multiple Grammys including Album of the Year, was voted as the best album of the year in The Village Voice’s annual Pazz & Jop critics poll and is consistenly ranked as one the greatest albums of all times. But even Stevie Wonder realized that there was one project of his that demanded to be recognized and appreciated while he was still able, and in 2014 he mounted a tour to present, in full, his 1976 magnum opus Songs in the Key of Life, which turns 40 next month. The album-two LPs plus an additional four-song EP-was the culmination of a historic period of creativity, a concentrated burst of music matched only by a handful of artists (mid-’60s Bob Dylan, early ’70s Rolling Stones, ’80s Prince)
Includes "Isn't She Lovely". Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. This album is probably in the top 10 of every music fan in existence. It was the first album I fell in love with as a 15yo kid when it came out, and if it's not my all-time fave still, it's right near the top. It has everything. First off, being a double-album means it's filled with a lot of music, which is a huge bonus when an album is really good (or great, such as this one is).

One of those rare double albums (double and a half, really, since it originally came out on 2LPs and an EP), Songs In the Key of Life might just be Stevie Wonder’s true masterpiece. Rarely have I found such an uplifting set of songs which manage to avoid schmaltz and address hard political issues whilst at the same time maintaining an upbeat attitude. It’s almost impossible not to have your spirits lifted when it comes on, and musically speaking it’s also incredibly adventurous, with Stevie not only knocking out some all-time soul classics but also dabbling in funk, jazz fusion, a little prog.
