Anyone familiar with the work of The Floating World, The Hare and the Moon, and The Great Attractor will be well aware of how formidable the talents showcased by this new recording are. And yet, on "Secrets to the Sea", Amanda Votta (vox, lyrics, slide baritone guitar), Grey Malkin (guitar, atmospherics), and Neddal Ayed (songwriting, guitars), strike out in entirely new directions, delivering an utterly compelling album, beneath the opulent beauty of whose surface lies a penumbral, elegiac complexity

The Floating World and the Wood Beyond. The Floating World is the main artistic project of Amanda Votta, specialising in flute-based ambient music with dark and mysterious undertones. Starting as a solo flute project with its first releases eight years ago, it has since attracted numerous collaborators on various instruments and, occasionally, spoken word. Recent albums The Apparition and We Hunted have appeared on Cyclic Law and Reverb Worship, respectively, and this label attention will hopefully propel Votta’s music into a wider audience.

The effect is intense and adventurous, read at white heat, possessed by light and the portrait of an artist in transition - not Smith, but Mapplethorpe - from the realm of the flesh to the blinding light of pure spirit, no longer contained by long-suffering flesh. The Coral Sea is for true fans of Smith, to be sure. That said, it is also for those who enjoy "performance poetry," though this feels so spontaneous that it transcends that term readily and completely
