Badmotorfinger is the third studio album by American rock band Soundgarden, released on September 24, 1991, through A&M Records. Soundgarden began the recording sessions for the album with new bassist Ben Shepherd in the spring of 1991. The album maintained the band's heavy metal sound while featuring an increased focus on songwriting as compared with the band's previous releases.
Some Band History The Soundgarden saga started in Illinois. After graduating from high school, Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto-along with future Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt-moved to Olympia, Washington, ostensibly to attend the Evergreen State College. The burgeoning music scene lured them to Seattle, where Yamamoto wound up rooming and playing in a band with drummer Chris Cornell. The next year Soundgarden finally succumbed and signed with a major label, A&M, for its Louder Than Love album. It wasn't an instant success, but it did help to expand the group's grassroots following dramatically, and earned the band a Grammy award nomination.
Bidding for a popular breakthrough with their second major-label album, Soundgarden suddenly developed a sense of craft, with the result that Badmotorfinger became far and away their most fully realized album to that point. Pretty much everything about Badmotorfinger is a step up from its predecessors - the production is sharper and the music more ambitious, while the songwriting takes a quantum leap in focus and consistency.
Badmotorfinger was the first Soundgarden album to feature bassist Ben Shepherd, completing the classic lineup of the band. Released on October 8, 1991, it went double platinum and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. The album, which spawned four singles, attracted critical applause from all over the world. A stadium tour supporting Guns ‘n’ Roses gave the band wider exposure.
On BadMotorFinger, Soundgarden finally blends all their influences and styles into one fully envisioned effort. Soundgarden has always maintained influences from rock mainstays like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin while drawing influences from punk too. Unlike previous releases, were there were punk songs and metal songs, BadMotorFinger has honest-to-god metal/punk hybrid songs that are awesome rockers, such as "Drawing Flies" and "Face Pollution". BadMotorFinger is great album for those who would like to hear "metal" Soundgarden, and is on par with Superunknown in its songwriting. Ehhh - 46%. UltraBoris, March 1st, 2004.
The album sustains a level of focus, cohesion, and intensity that the band’s later, more varied albums lack. The album sustains a level of focus, cohesion, and intensity that the band’s later, more varied albums lack. With their detuned guitars, plodding tempos, permanently downcast expressions, and hardware-store dress code, Soundgarden looked every bit the grunge part, at least on first glance.
Badmotorfinger is the third album by the American rock band Soundgarden. It was released on October 8, 1991 through A&M Records. After touring in support of its previous album, Louder Than Love, released in 1989, the band began the recording sessions for its next album with new bassist Ben Shepherd. The music on the album maintained the band's heavy metal sound while featuring an increased focus on songwriting when compared with the band's previous releases.
