The experiments on Enquiries proffer a keen insight into the musical talents of Lloyd James, just a small sampling to be sure, whose gamut of expression on the album is startling from one track to the next at first listen, so much so it could almost be a different artist each track. That being said, the album has cohesiveness to its erratic eccentricities to be enjoyed repeatedly

David Hume, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding/An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals. Theology, as it proves the existence of a Diety, and the immortality of souls, is composed partly of reasonings concerting particular partly concerning general fact. It has foundation in reason, so far as it is supported be experience. But it’s best and most solid foundation is faith and divine revelation. Enquiries Concerning Huma. has been added to your Cart. Hume's Enquiries are more or less a repackaging of the material from Books I and III of his earlier A Treatise of Human Nature. Ever desirous of literary fame and dismayed by the lack of interest others had shown for his prior tome, Hume went back to the drawing board and attempted to present his philosophical system in a way that would be palatable to the reading public. In fact, Hume is open to a number of different interpretations, and these different interpretations have been taken up by subsequent philosphers to develop areas of synthetic philosophical ideas, as well as further developments more directly out of Empiricism (such as Phenomenology).

AN ENQUIRY concerning HUMAN UNDERSTANDING. SECTION . of the different species of philosophy. SECTION I. of the origin of ideas. SECTION II. of the association of ideas. sceptical doubts concerning the operations of the understanding. sceptical solution of these doubts.

AN ENQUIRY CONCERNING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING SECTION I. OF THE DIFFERENT SPECIES OF PHILOSOPHY 1. Moral philosophy, or the science of human nature, may be treated after two different manners; each of which has its peculiar merit, and may contribute to the entertainment, instruction, and reformation of mankind. While they attempt this arduous task, they are deterred by no difficulties; but proceeding from particular instances to general principles, they still push on their enquiries to principles more general, and rest not satisfied till they arrive at those original principles, by which, in every science, all human curiosity must be bounded.

Reviews about Retarder - Enquiries (Concerning Number, Modernity And Other Interesting Subjects) (1):

It only takes the intro track of Lloyd James’ solo debut as Retarder to realise that Enquiries is going to be quite the eclectic experience, one which presents an unwavering attitude of absolute indifference to popular forms of music. While not quite the composition of Beethoven or Bach, there is a definite orchestration at work: each track itself is a movement, separate to each other. As such there is panoply of expressive experimental sounds, odd arrangements buttressed tightly across eight incredibly divergent tracks.Pirouetting piano opens the album in discordant display, tones offset minor and dissonant with a melody just out of grasp until the patterns of the rhythmical tapping emerge from the non-stop gyrations. It is far from the realms of the more popular palette that Naevus evince and it becomes just the first in a ride of strange songs. There are ambient flutters where cans rustle in winds, which flute pan-like harmonies out as bursts of steam frosting into icicled bits and bytes, and dark and internally haunted empty rock that stomps and growls. For the faithful, there is a track similar to the Naevus-style, but when juxtaposed subsequently by a throbbing bodily pulse and guitars flanging into white noise, sparking like welding torches, and electronic signals squealing unrelenting sirens, it is all like enjoying the countryside before then returning to the mechanical factory. A midi ensemble blare plastic horn to soft strings in an improvised performance of virtuosity next. Lyrical accompaniment to the songs on Enquiries are rare with only a few arranged around melody and form, even in these moments Retarder takes different tack with the presentation of arrangement and instrumentation. The experiments on Enquiries proffer a keen insight into the musical talents of Lloyd James, just a small sampling to be sure, whose gamut of expression on the album is startling from one track to the next at first listen, so much so it could almost be a different artist each track. That being said, the album has cohesiveness to its erratic eccentricities to be enjoyed repeatedly.Tourette Records keep the packaging succinct, dark ochre gatefold digipak set tastefully in old style serif with an inlaid photograph of Mr. James and the liner notes on the recording process: everything procured from his hands to your ears.
