Rhythm of the Night is the fourth studio album by DeBarge, released by Gordy Records on March 14, 1985. It reached on the Billboard 200 and on the R&B Album Chart. The album was also certified Platinum by the RIAA. DeBarge continued their success streak with their third album, 1983's In a Special Way. They went back into the studio to record what became Rhythm of the Night.

Of the album's four releases, two were Top Ten singles on the Billboard pop charts: "Rhythm of the Night" (Number Three), and "Who's Holding Donna Now" (Number Six). The former, which is featured in the Berry Gordy movie The Last Dragon, conveys a grande fiesta ambience with its Caribbean rhythm.

The song is said to have jump-started the career of songwriter, Diane Warren and was the biggest hit recorded by the Gordy family singing group. boosting similar success for its parent album of the same name.
On the Rhythm Of The Night album, El was joined by his sister Bunny and brothers James (who was briefly married to Janet Jackson in 1984), Marty and Randy. Warren penned this song for the 1985 Motown-produced martial arts movie The Last Dragon, which starred the Prince ingenue Vanity in the female lead. Motown head Berry Gordy was the executive producer of the film, and DeBarge were signed to his Gordy label. Warren had the song in the works when she got the call to write a song for the film. The street party sounds overdubbed onto the record included contributions from members of the DeBarge group. This idea was cribbed from the 1983 Lionel Richie song, "All Night Long (All Night). Diane Warren used a drum machine to write this song, but it was recorded with live musicians at the insistence of producer Richard Perry.
