Pretenders is the debut studio album by British-American band The Pretenders, released on 7 January 1980 under Real Records in the UK, and Sire Records in the United States. A combination of rock, punk and pop music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket". Nick Lowe produced the Pretenders' first single, "Stop Your Sobbing", but decided not to work with them again as he thought the band was "not going anywhere".
Its all Pretenders, but even more so the Chrissie Hynde Show. The Pretenders was an album very much in the right place at the right time in the course of rock n roll history. With punk old news in much of Europe, and American punk still very much a thing of the underground in 1980 and dismissed outright by the mainstream, this album and band gave a rock n roll community something new and bold to embrace without feeling like they had to give up what they once loved.

The Pretenders appeared on the music scene's radar as part of the new wave band era in the late '70s. Although the group was led by American Chrissie Hynde they were first associated with the . post punk new wave bands. Hynde continued to be the lead singer, rhythm guitarist, principal songwriter and front person for the band through a number of line-up changes, some caused by drug related deaths, and continued to release unique pop/rock through the next four-plus decades. 8. "Mystery Achievement"- Also from The Pretenders' powerhouse first album, this new wave rocker is loaded with attitude from Hynde and energy from the band. Typical for them, the somewhat obscure lyrical content just added to the "cool factor" of the song. 7. "Talk of The Town" - A song from the band's second album Pretenders II, this was a single as well.
