This album combines the results of their first two recording sessions, on June 13, 1952, and March 16, 1953. At the second session, Jesse McReynolds was on leave from the army. Originally, the tracks were released as singles.

Tracks 1 to 8 recorded June 13, 1952 Tracks 9 to 16 recorded March 16, 1953.

These songs have been released under various album names (not all albums listed include all 20 songs). Best of the Best: Legendary Bluegrass Duets (Federal, 2003). 14 singles recorded for Starday and released on various compilations but not released together until 2003 (and even then, only 10 of the tracks.

Jim & Jesse were an American bluegrass music duo composed of brothers Jim McReynolds (February 13, 1927 – December 31, 2002) and Jesse McReynolds (born July 9, 1929). The two were born and raised in Carfax, a community near Coeburn, Virginia. Their grandfather, Charles McReynolds had led the band "The Bull Mountain Moonshiners", who recorded at the famous Bristol Sessions in 1927.

Jim and Jesse became members of the Grand Ole Opry in 1964; Jesse continues to maintain the duo's Opry membership since Jim's death in 2001. He is the second-oldest standing Opry member, four months younger than Jan Howard. In January 2017 he appeared on the CMT network show Nashville as a blind singer who inspires the character Rayna James (played by Connie Britton). These songs have been released under various album names (not all albums listed include all 20 songs).

However, the duo quickly returned to a traditional bluegrass sound, since a bluegrass revival had gripped the attention of many country fans and college students across the United States. For the next two decades, the duo was a staple on the bluegrass festival scene, and they recorded for a variety of independent labels, including CMH, Rounder, and their own Old Dominion and Double J labels.
