October, originally with the working title of Scarlet, was released in the summer of 1981. In several countries, October was re-issued on 5" CD in March 1996 as part of the Island Master series. This Island Masters re-issue featured higher quality paper and extra pictures from the original LP's inner sleeve. The fact that the first album had a bit of success in America meant that the band toured over there for a long time to do the groundwork. October is the second studio album from U2, the follow-up to their impressive debut Boy. I think it’s fair to say that the Irish quartet didn’t really follow through on the promise of Boy until 1983’s War - October is generally seen as the least-popular of the 11 studio albums from the band. This is not to say that there aren’t some inspiring and attractive moments here, but it doesn’t hold a candle to their albums of the following decade. But enough about U2’s other work, why is October rarely spoken about and widely seen as one of the band’s worst albums" Well it never seems to find its niche. The experimentation is tangible, but the results are varied.
October is U2’s second studio album which was released on the 12 October 1981. This album is often referred to as U2’s most religious piece of work as it contains many references to God and has spiritual themes throughout. It was made after the band’s participation in the Christian organisation, The Shalom Fellowship, and describes the struggle U2 has between following a spiritual lifestyle and the ‘rock and roll’ way of life
U2 sounded so confident and assured on their debut that perhaps it was inevitable they would stumble slightly on its follow-up, October. The record isn't weaker than its predecessor because it repeats the formula of Boy. It's because the band tries too hard to move forward. Bono, in particular, tries too hard to make big political, emotional, and religious statements, but the remainder of the band isn't innocent. In general, the music is too pompous, with the sound overwhelming the actual songs.

On March 22, 1981, while playing a show at the Fog Horn in Portland, Oregon, Bono’s briefcase went missing. The briefcase included a working visa for Bono, notebooks and lyric sheets, letters to Bono from Ali as well as tour documents, letters from fans, and numerous photos
