Jericho Sirens is the fourth full-length album by American post-hardcore band Hot Snakes, and marks their return to the studio following an extended hiatus from 2005 to 2011. Jericho Sirens Q&A. Writers John Reis & Rick Froberg. More Hot Snakes albums.

Jericho Sirens is an album that can play to both Hot Snakes’ audience and those who might have hoped for any kind of new Drive Like Jehu music with that reunion - the Venn diagram overlap between those two demographics being almost entire. A relief then, that Hot Snakes are as dry, dented and slightly demented as ever.

With Froberg and Reis both on the cusp of their fifties, and their most lauded works over 15 years behind them, Jericho Sirens could have easily become yet another example of why old guys shouldn’t play punk music. Luckily, the album sees Hot Snakes returning just as ferocious and caustic as ever. Opener I Need a Doctor blasts out of the gate with jagged riffing, propulsive drums, and Froberg’s signature shouted vocals

Jericho Sirens releases the pause button as if Hot Snakes had been locked in freeze-frame for the past 14 years, instantly thrusting them back into action on the frenzied I Need a Doctor. With its manic expressions of helplessness and desperation ( I need to be near a toilet! ), the song seemingly invites interpretations tied to America’s current political crisis and ongoing healthcare nightmare. On this album, it sounds like they’re already bracing for the end of their lives, if not the world. No fewer than three songs feature the word death in their titles, and even its most intimate scenes are rendered in apocalyptic terms. The closest thing to a love song here, Jericho Sirens’ arresting title track, finds Froberg seeking solace in his partner from the tinnitus piercing his brain, evoked vividly by the song’s bulldozer swing and ominous melodica refrain.

Jericho Sirens is an incredible turn, and proof to the other half-hearted post-hardcore comebacks of the last years (looking at you At the Drive-In, Refused and more) that it is possible to still be high-quality and relevant. In fact, in places Hot Snakes' fourth album is so good, it even puts newer bands who have come up in the meantime to shame. Whenever Hot Snakes decide to get together, they will always be welcome.

Jericho Sirens is the first Hot Snakes album in 14 years and it comes blasting out of the gate like a bull with murder in his bloodshot eyes. The leadoff track, "I Need a Doctor," is a thrilling declaration that the band is back and as mighty as they were before. John "Speedo" Reis and Rick Froberg's dual guitar attack, Gar Wood's pummeling bass, and the dual drum attack of Jason Kourkounis and Mario Rubalcaba combine to knock the breath out of the listener, while Froberg's howling vocals pick them up off the floor and slap them around
