The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is an extended play by the American progressive metal band Between the Buried and Me. It was released on April 12, 2011 and was the group's first release through Metal Blade Records after leaving Victory Records in 2010. The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is the first release in a two-part concept album suite.

I've always been fascinated with this band's ability to seamlessly blend genres, ranging from progressive rock, death metal to jazz, blues, folk and ambient electronica. Their biggest album to date was 2007's epic Colors, where they shrouded their earlier straightforward technical death metal sound with a newfound love of all these other genres. The new EP (though at around the 30 minute mark, and being the first of a 2-parter, this is closer to a mini album really) definitely keeps this going. Last year they released The Great Misdirect, which, while still brilliant and head and shoulders above a lot of the metal community at the moment, it failed to capture me in quite the same way Colors did.

This EP, "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues", is fantastic. It shows tremendous growth in their ability to write coherent, well arranged music. I am one of those people who firmly believe that Between the Buried and Me's album Colors is one of the finest metal albums ever made. With that in mind, I've followed the band fairly closely ever since I heard that album. Their follow-up album The Great Misdirect was also very good, but to me it seemed to be lacking a bit of the magic that Colors had. Thus, I was very excited to hear this release to see if they'd be able to recapture the spark. Unfortunately, I don't think that's the case here.
