John McLaughlin - The Heart Of Things download album

The Heart of Things is a jazz/rock album released in 1997 by John McLaughlin on Verve, catalogue number 539 153-2. The genre is very much brawny electric jazz fusion featuring some young newcomers to McLaughlin's orbit as well as the familiar Beard and Chambers. All the pieces were written by McLaughlin, who also produced the album. The executive producers were Jean-Philippe Aliard and Daniel Richard. Production co-ordination was by Christian Pégand, assisted by Karen Strugg.

Dennis Chambers, a leftover from the McLaughlin organ trio of the early '90s, is probably the most incendiary drummer McLaughlin has featured since Billy Cobham, and he really mixes things up throughout the CD, including a sizzling one-on-one duel with the guitarist on the questionably titled "Acid Jazz. McLaughlin brandishes his technique with the old flash, yet as has been the pattern in his middle age, his tone is mellow and rounded, often heard through the transforming gauze of MIDI electronics.

The Heart of Things allows John McLaughlin to surround himself with some young monsters. A strong line-up on this 1997 record includes McLaughlin alumni Jim Beard on keyboards and Dennis Chambers on drums, as well as electric bassist Matthew Garrison and saxophonist Gary Thomas. The youthful newcomers, Garrison and Thomas, front bands of their own and have their own musical ideas. They have integrated some of these concepts, offering solid support for The Heart of Things. McLaughlin's guitar tone has more of a bite than in many previous outings. This is very welcome. Still, despite his beautiful playing on this album, a more limited use of his ring-modulator would have been beneficial.

respected jazz fusion artists I always admire is guitar player John Mclaughlin who was the founder of the invincible Mahavishnu Orchestra. He still plays and busy doing solo albums. While jazz fusion was a bit silent in the late 90& Mclaughlin released an album, & Heart of Things& in 1997. For me this album started what ought to be the sound of the new flavor in jazz fusion. This album contains only six masterpiece tracks. The guys who backed up Mclaughlin in this project were: Gary Thomas.

With almost the identical band McLaughlin used on 1997's The Heart of Things, these six long tracks make up his best pure jazz-rock fusion record since Electric Guitarist in 1978. On the other side of his high energy, McLaughlin is one of the most respectful musicians in the business, in this case honoring drummer Tony Williams on "Tony," with the very powerful Dennis Chambers executing a long, entertaining solo.
