Kashif was born Michael Jones on December 26, 1956, in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. Some media outlets have listed his year of birth as 1959. In 1984, his second album, Send Me Your Love resulted in two Grammy nominations, "Edgartown Groove", featuring Al Jarreau, and the instrumental "Call Me Tonight" along with the hits "Baby Don't Break Your Baby's Heart" and "Are You the Woman". Introduced to Arista by Milton Allen, its artist development director in 1983, his self-titled debut album Kashif (1983) spawned the hits "I Just Gotta Have You (Lover Turn Me On)", "Stone Love", "Help Yourself to My Love", and "Say Something Love".
Kashif Saleem – formerly a member of Funk giants . Express – was at the forefront of synth-fueled smooth R&B in the early ‘80s. He was one of the first artists to embrace modern technology when it came to creating Soul and Funk music yet he still managed to make it sound human and heartfelt. Other highlights: Loving You Only combines a Prince-inspired groove with early ‘80s rap courtesy of Doug E. Fresh. Love Changes (with Meli’sa Morgan) and Love On The Rise (with Kenny G) are catchy and inspired collaborations. Personality is fun and catchy as sin (and most certainly Prince-inspired)!

Kashif went the duet route on this late '80s release, working with both Dionne Warwick and Meli'sa Morgan and doing relatively well both times. Each duet cracked the R&B Top 20, and the collaboration with Morgan gave him a number two single. The album was otherwise as slick and overproduced as ever, and his singing went back to the subdued patterns of earlier works. But Kashif was still rolling along at the time, producing and writing other hits for Giorge Pettus and Johnny Kemp. Only a few months later, things changed radically in urban contemporary and R&B music, and Kashif's sound and style would quickly become passe.
