Start the Car is the third solo album from the singer/songwriter Jude Cole. Released in 1992, five years after his self-titled debut solo album. After A View from Third Street, Jude Cole shifted to a more heartland rock sound. Nowhere is that more evident than the disc's title song first track, a combination of mp that rocks more than his previous two albums.

Jude Cole joined the British power pop band the Records in 1980, after their first album was released, and remained with the group for one album. After a few years, Cole then re-emerged with his own solo record, 1987's self-titled Jude Cole, which was a much slicker, mainstream-oriented affair than any of the Records' records. The album did have its charm, but it was unfortunately ignored. That was not the case with his second album, 1990's A View from 3rd Street, which had a bona fide hit single with the sweet, yearning "Baby, It's Tonight

Toughening up his sound even more, Jude Cole seemed to find a home on the college radio circuit and even some alternative rock stations, and this fine disc shows great growth. Start the Car, whose title track was a minor hit, and other cuts such as "Just Another Night" and "First Your Money (Then Your Clothes)," show Cole still struggling to get out of Bryan Adams' shadow, but here he has made great strides in doing so. It is another solid effort.
