Eric Dolphy - At The Five Spot Volume 2 download album

At the Five Spot volumes one and two is a pair of jazz albums documenting one night (16 July 1961) from the end of Eric Dolphy and Booker Little's two-week residency at the Five Spot in New York. This was the only night to be recorded; the engineer was Rudy Van Gelder. A third volume from this session was released, titled Memorial Album, containing "Number Eight (Potsa Lotsa)" and "Booker's Waltz"

This is the second of three sets that document the Eric Dolphy/Booker Little quintet's playing at the Five Spot (the third volume is titled Memorial Album). It features a group made up of pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Ed Blackwell really stretching out during long versions of Little's "Aggression" and the standard "Like Someone in Love

Everyone seems firmly attached to the 'strange but catchy' aesthetic, in that no matter how 'out' the music gets, elements rooted in 'bop' remain for the listener to latch onto. Davis and Blackwell get into the aggressive spirit too and their solos are, if not as interesting, just as energetic as n.

Dolphy's playing – whether on alto, bass clarinet or flute – always defied categorization, while Little (who passed away less than three months later) was the first new voice on the trumpet to emerge.

Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot. The music of Eric Dolphy and Booker Little (the latter died of uremia in October of 1961 at the age of twenty-three, only several months after the engagement at the Five Spot which this series of albums documents) is representative of the new energy, the new dynamism, in jazz. Still, as the musk in this album wilt witness, Dolphy and Little were surmounting both the outwardly imposed obstacles and those that are developed within. Robert Levin, LP liner notes. Joe Goldberg observed in his liner notes to the first LP volume : In format, it was a standard quintet of the kind that the bop era had made traditional – saxophone, trumpet and three rhythm – but the music hinted at developments that were going far beyond that concept.
