The Slaves are a duo from Portland, Oregon and their Pacific northwest home is not the only thing the pair has in common with Liz Harris of Grouper fame. It's clear that Barbara Kinzle and Birch Cooper have a hugely ambitious bent. The dark, gaudy majesty of their textures evoke a similarly opulent image. On "Born into Light," those textures are impossibly pure, almost too rich for their own good
Spirits of the Sun’s four tracks are lengthy but the overall running time of album is (wisely) short, barely over thirty minutes. One of the record’s most flattering distinctions is its tonal progression, a thematic journey that could be best described as light into darkness. The first half of the record is ethereal and airy, while the second half is more claustrophobic and dense. The opener, the appropriately titled 1111, begins with some digitally processed chanted choruses.
The Slaves may well have gone and made one of the standout debuts of the year - a layered mass of ethereal vocals most reminiscent of Grouper with a brutal . MP3 Release (4). £. 9.

Metal infused Shoegaze or Shoegaze infused Metal: it is hard to tell. Pigeon-holing is rather troublesome for them. Some of these songs come close to perfectly ambient pieces, down to the wordless vocals. Yet in the background a harsh noise lingers. What this tension between the beautiful and ugly does is bring the listener into a giant ecosystem. 111’ begins the album off on a poppy note. This is the shortest song on the entire album. As the background noises gain in intensity the entire piece appears to lift off. It is a wonderful feeling. Working up to this ending feels doubly assuring
Throughout Spirits of the Sun, there is a dichotomy pulling in opposite directions. The Slaves create music that is simultaneously beautiful and grotesque. There’s a twisted dark side that is consistently being overshadowed by sounds that are overwhelming and majestic. Each aspect pushes and pulls, but the beauty and the symmetry win out in the end. By the time the album closes with the soaring Born Into Light, it is statuesque and firmly entrenched in the deepest reaches of your psyche. Spirits of the Sun is a force and The Slaves will guide you toward your own oblivion
