The idea behind the 1971 London Howlin' Wolf Sessions came to Chess Records producer Norman Dayron after a supposed concert at the legendary San Fransisco Filmore Auditorium. Approaching Electric Flag guitarist Mike Bloomfield as well as then Cream guitarist Eric Clapton, Dayron proposed a major recording between the two and blues legend Howlin' Wolf. The London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions Q&A.

When the original London Howlin' Wolf Session album came out on I was there purchasing the 33rpm vinyl. It was great! I was a big Clapton fan and loved the blues in general. This "rarities" version adds to that session with material that didn't make the original album. I think this makes the picture much more complete.

The story of Howlin’ Wolf’s London Sessions album has its genesis in San Francisco in August 1968 when Cream and Electric Flag played the Fillmore Auditorium. Backstage, Norman Dayron who was a staff producer for Chess Records introduced himself to Eric Clapton and Mike Bloomfield who were chatting. How would you like to make an album with Howlin’ Wolf? He said to Clapton. Unsure initially of his credentials, Clapton was hesitant, but when it was conformed that Dayron was who he said he was Clapton agreed. It only needed for the guitarists schedule to fit in with Wolf’s and it would happen.
