Today I killed a man I didn't know I held my rifle high and shot him low I'd like to think he really was to blame Well I never knew or never will his name. I guess that someone, somewhere knew him well And they'll cry when they're told that he has fell But it's hard for me to think of him as good 'Cause he'd done me just the same if he could. Oh mother, oh mama, I'm so cold And I feel like I am quickly growing old So I hope you are thinking of your son 'Cause tomorrow morning I'll be twenty-one.
I was his life I was his reason, for breathin' I watched him cry Beggin' and pleadin' while I was leavin' I looked into his eyes And I realized Killed a man today Killed a man today Took his life away Killed a man today And it killed me I really tried (I really tried, I really tried, tried) I tried to love
Hamilton frequently didn’t do himself any favors with his outspoken nature, and his insecurities about his illegitimacy caused him to be hypersensitive to insults. His basic cynicism and mistrust of people made him wary of popular trends and leaving the fate of America in the hands of the general public who he felt could be too easily swayed by a mob mentality and demagogues. This was an excellent, and exhaustingly thorough biography. I wouldn't pick it up again, and I will recommend it to hardcore history buffs and not necessarily your average reader. But it shed a lot of light on the early days of our country, it gave me a new appreciation for Hamilton, Washington, and others.
