Souvlaki is the second studio album by the English rock band Slowdive. Recorded in 1992, it was released in the United Kingdom on 17 May 1993 by record label Creation, then on 8 February 1994 in the United States. The album peaked at number 51 on the UK Albums Chart, and, despite an initial mixed reception from critics, has since received acclaim and been hailed as a classic of the shoegazing genre.

To say Slowdive and their second album, Souvlaki, weren’t appreciated in their time is an almost comedic understatement. The band have recounted the story of a gig on that tour where they watched a woman mop the floor while they played. Hyperbole aside, the fact was that Souvlaki was released to a British press that had moved on to Britpop and couldn’t be bothered. In America, where being a contemporary fan of shoegaze and Britpop was totally compatible, their label SBK bungled the release, sending the band on promo tours without an album to sell.
Souvlaki, then, is the Rumours for the dream-pop set, a bracing chronicle of heartbreak that finds each contributors to that heartbreak playing equal roles. 2. The album was the group's last in the Shoegazing and Dream Pop style before they took a more ambient and post-rock direction on their third and final studio album, Pygmalion. Prior to writing the album, band members Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead had ended their relationship and Halstead began to spend more time writing songs alone; a process that had been completed by the full band in the past. Early demos for the album were influenced by Joy Division and Low by David Bowie. These demos were initially rejected by Creation Records boss Alan McGee, but he later decided to give the band full creative control over the album.
But time has not only vindicated Just for a Day, it’s revealed it to be a crucial shoegaze template-something easily heard in electrogaze performers, post-rock bands, black metal acts, and anyone with a taste for majestic, stately, and moody-as-hell compositions. The album went Top Five in the UK, driven by the singles Leave Them All Behind -a monstrously intrepid, eight-minute slice of thrilling guitars-and the hook-filled Twisterella. Souvlaki Space Station finds a way to bring in the clatter and wooze of dub, while Dagger concludes the album on a Lee Hazlewood-like hushed intensity.
