This is the 29th missive from Frank Baugh’s Kimberly Dawn imprint, which focuses solely on the 3″ CDr format, and does so with consistently excellent results. Sensible Nectar (the name’s since been changed to Pregnant Spore) is the solo work of Justin Marc Lloyd, and here he gives us a concise introduction into his soundworld. The b/w cover art suggests both information and sensory overload, an impression confirmed in the first track, a mere 34-second-long shard of sound. The second track continues in this vein and overblown vocals, electronics, and washes of feedback enter the mix, but Lloyd also seems to be slowly incorporating new softer elements too. Implied rhythms hint toward industrial influences, and a newfound sense of depth is present. It’s in the third track, “sutures,” however, where Lloyd pulls back just as quickly as he came on strong, and in so doing demonstrates an impressive finesse. As guitar-focused washes of ambient sound build up, electronics and processing are added in and soon we’re back in noisy territory but always grounded by the calm stillness of the guitar playing. This centerpiece track is a tour de force, and makes what could have been simply another harsh noise disc into something much deeper and more sonically rich. To bring things full circle, Lloyd lays the noise on heavy and thick again to close the disc, and somehow it all feels effortless and works like a charm. A compelling and dynamic release.-Foxy Digitalis
