John Baltzell was one of the earliest old-time fiddlers to be captured by the newly developing recording technology of the early '20s. The first sessions he recorded for Edison in the fall of 1923 came only three months after the recording debut of Fiddlin' John Carson, perhaps the first historic American old-time fiddler to be documented for posterity.

John Baltzell ( born September 23, 1860, Knox County, Ohio, † 1940) was an American Old-time musicians. Baltzell was one of the first rural musicians, the recordings made. From a farmer, he later received a defective fiddle, which he repaired. One of his biggest musical influences was Daniel Emmett, composer of the song Dixie, who also lived in Knox County. Edison 52395 (78 RPM), 1928, John Baltzell. Baltzell was from Mt. Vernon, Ohio, the same town as minstrel Dan Emmett (d. 1904). Emmett returned to the town, poor, in 1888 and later taught Baltzell to play the fiddle}. Scottish, Strathspey. AKA and see Miss Drummond of Perth. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the reel Highland Plaid in Alexander M'Glashan's 1780 collection (pg. 30), and traced the strathspey setting, called Lord Seaforth, to one of the Cumming collections (c. 1780's). A strathspey setting of the melody is in later Scottish collections as Lord Seaforth.
