The name Tim Catlin may not be terribly well known amongst the avant-guitarist circles; but his recorded output clearly stands amongst the best that Glenn Branca, Keith Rowe, and Jim O’Rourke have mustered from their six strings hard wired into the histories of electroacoustics, minimalism, and post-punk experimentation. Radio Ghosts arrives nearly five years after his debut album Slow Twitch and showcases Catlin’s unassuming expertise with the finer aspects of the mechanically prepared guitar. For all of its dynamic frequencies and crosshatched vibrations, Radio Ghosts is devoid of Marshall stacks, Sunn amps, and stomp boxes, as Catlin captures the acoustic phenomenon of the guitar’s transient vibrations and steers clear of any tricked out sonic demolition.

Radio Ghosts is his second solo album and the drone is writ large through both releases. There’s nothing perfunctory about Catlin’s compositions however, which are as rich and alive as comparable recordings from Andrew Chalk or Organum. He has a rather painterly take on the tabletop guitar, extrapolating from Keith Rowe’s application of the values of abstract expressionism to the instrument.

Tim Catlin is a Melbourne based guitarist and composer. His practice is primarily focused on extending and re-investigating the sonic possibilities of the guitar. Centered around drone-based and immersive methodologies his music uses a combination of both traditional and extended guitar techniques. These include guitar preparations, customised playing devices and string exciters, home-built electronics and effects, live-looping and modified guitar design
