Tuesday, March 26, 2013. EVAN PARKER TRIO and PETER BRÖTZMANN TRIO – The Bishop's Move (2004). Label: Les Disques Victo – VICTO CD 093 Format: CD, Album; Country: Canada - Released: 2004 Style: Free Jazz, Free Improvisation Recorded live at the 20 Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville, 19, 5, 2003. When he found out that Evan Parker ’ s trio with Barry Guy and Paul Lytton and Peter Brötzmann ’ s Die Like a Dog trio with William Parker and Hamid Drake would both be touring during the spring of 2003, he arranged a one-off meeting of the two at the tail end of their tours. Hanns Stein & Cirilo Vila - Eisler Brecht Canciones (1971) - This is an album with classical songs by Hanns Eisler and Bertolt Brecht interpreted by the tenor Hanns Stein accompanied by Cirilo Vila on piano. Personnel: Peter Brötzmann: Tenor Sax, Tarogato; Hamid Drake: Percussion, Drums, Djembe; Paul Lytton: Percussion, Drums; Evan Parker: Saxophone; Alex von Schlippenbach: Piano; William Parker: Bass.

On the right side: Peter Brötzmann and his trusty rhythm section, bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake. These are two highly experienced and gifted trios, with different approaches (complementary ones, some will say). Recorded live at the 2003 Victoriaville Festival, the album consists of a single 73-minute improvisation by Brotzmann's group (with bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake) and tenor/soprano saxophonist Evan Parker's (with pianist Alex von Schlippenbach and drummer Paul Lytton). Each saxophonist seems to move somewhat in the direction of his opposite: Parker adds a little Ayler-ish madness to his hyperarticulate style, and Brotzmann's lines are more well-defined than they can be in other circumstances.

Album · 2003 · 1 Song. Parker next released Time Lapse, his debut on John Zorn’s Tzadik in 2006, along with Crossing the River on his own PSI imprint. 2007 was equally prolific, with three albums on three different labels including A Glancing Blow on Cleanfeed; the label also issued Belle Ville in 2008.

Evan Parker’s trio with Paul Lytton and Alex Schlippenbach (swapped in for bassist Barry Guy), and Peter Brötzmann’s trio with Hamid Drake and William Parker, were on North American tours at the same exact time in Spring, 2003. Why not arrange a meeting for them at FIMAV? This, then, was the first time that this grouping performed together, the debut of the Evan Parker/Peter Brötzmann supertrio. The historic results are here for you to hear, testament as much to the integrity of the two working trios as to the combinatorial force of the sextet. Naturally, this says almost nothing of the music.
