III Wishes is the third album by the group Shooting Star. This is the band's first album without keyboardist Bill Guffey, who had departed from the band the previous year. All tracks written by Van McLain and Gary West (except where noted). Van McLain - guitars, lead vocals. Gary West - lead vocals, guitars, keyboards. Steve Thomas - drums. Charles Waltz - violin, keyboards, vocals.
III Wishes" is the third album by American rock band Shooting Star. It was released on July 9, 1982. Loved the songs but always sounded like this album was recorded in a bathroom or a barrel. Not sure if it is where it was recorded or how it's mixed but something about the sound is just off to me. You know it's a great band when the sound quality sucks but the record still rocks!
Recorded at the storied Colorado studio Caribou Ranch, III Wishes captures this killer Kansas City sextet in a holding pattern, where the rootsy vocal of Gary West transmogrifies into Steve Perry's soaring croon. Even the usual expert musicianship resembles a certain Bay-Area phenomenon. Journey boardsman Kevin Elson shouldn't shoulder all the blame. Sure, Shooting Star deserves a piece of the AOR profit as much as any act, but the group is too talented and honorable not to make music on their own terms
III WISHES, Shooting Star's third great album in a row, is nevertheless not quite as great as the first two or SILENT SCREAM, yet is still a great piece of AOR that bridges the gap between Journey and Foghat. Vocalist Gary West retains his rootsy vocal tone here, thus setting the band apart from its AOR peers.
III WISHES, Shooting Star's third great album in a row, is nevertheless not quite as great as the first two or SILENT SCREAM, yet is still a great piece of AOR that bridges the gap between Journey and Foghat. True blue Shooting Star fans will find this a satisfying album. Hard rockers like "Are You Ready" and "Do You Feel Alright" are much in the vein of the Over The Top stylings found on "Shooting Star" and "Hang On For Your Life". But this album leans heavily in the direction of melodic, softer songs.
