Kelela - Hallucinogen download album
Hallucinogen is the debut extended play (EP) by American singer and songwriter Kelela. It was released on October 9, 2015, by Warp Records. In an interview with The Fader, Kelela discussed the inspiration behind each of the songs on Hallucinogen. A Message" and "Hallucinogen" were recorded at the same session with Arca before Cut 4 Me was finished
Her new EP, Hallucinogen, uses the gristle and guts of feeling as a thematic base for exploring new textures in music. Like Cut 4 Me, the sound is like being enveloped in the black-lit silence of the intro to Belly: it’s a sensuous, sensitive, hi-definition approach to R&B. Some of the producers are the same (Kingdom, Nguzunguzu’s MA) and some are new (Arca, Kendrick and Drake collaborator DJ Dahi), but these partnerships hew to what’s now the Kelela. Arca’s hollow kickdrums prod the song along at a ragged crawl, allowing Kelela to wring out a melody with her voice while he fills the space with funereal, yawping organ-like patches.

One of the albums that was on a tiny shortlist for Album Of The Week last week was Unbreakable, the first new Janet Jackson album in eight years. Jackson picked a good moment to come back. Unbreakable is, by her standards, a sweet and personal record, and it reunites her with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the production team who worked with her constantly at her peak. And while the record never goes out of its way to sound contemporary - Jackson is, after all, sadly pretty much the only person hitting Missy Elliott up for a guest verse in 2015 - it’s striking how of-the-moment Jackson sounds.
In that way, Hallucinogen shows Kelela’s remarkable confidence and strength through a fragility and willingness to admit faults and weaknesses. She chooses the cold landscapes of the trap beats, iced synths, and empty spaces to show that these too are places where she can thrive, even when everything has been stripped away. The EP is an artistic statement of growth, a first step that bodes well for the album that will inevitably follow - and hopefully one that will take larger steps into even lesser worn territory. Essential Tracks: Rewind, A Message, and All the Way Down.
